Installing n8n on Synology with Docker

At NewPath Consulting, we like to explore and use open source technology that is exciting and new. n8n (aka nodemation) out of Berlin, Germany is the latest open source automation app.

From n8n docs (emphasis ours):

n8n (pronounced n-eight-n) helps you to interconnect every app with an API in the world with each other to share and manipulate its data without a single line of code. It is an easy to use, user-friendly and highly customizable service, which uses an intuitive user interface for you to design your unique workflows very fast. Hosted on your server and not based in the cloud, n8n keeps your sensitive data secure in your own trusted hosting.

In short, n8n enables automation authors to to build visual workflows that move data between various web apps. At the heart of the system is the ability to authenticate and access REST API end points from many popular apps like Dropbox, Google Drive and Office 365. As of this time there are over 150 supported apps and the number grows every day.

We installed n8n using docker on our Synology DS220+. An n8n docker image is available in docker hub. You can access it online to experiment:

user: npc
password: n8n

This is not a production system so please don’t ask for support from us. Also do not save any API keys or credentials you don’t want someone else to use.

Just experiment and have fun. This system may be taken down for maintenance regularly.
