NewPath Consulting is a cloud broker. So what does that mean?

NewPath Consulting is a "cloud services broker" it turns out. That is just a modern term for what used to be known as a value added reseller (VAR) - widely known throughout the enterprise IT industry. A cloud broker is a fancy way of saying that we:

  1. Resell a set of products we think are the best. We have hand picked them and built relationships with the people who run the companies that make our preferred service selections. We chose them because we think they are a good fit for small businesses we serve, and because they all have outstanding customer service.
  2. We add value through support and service of each and every product. And we liaison with each cloud provider to escalate issues we cannot solve on our own with a preferred support channel. We help you understand how each can align with your business needs and help you achieve top notch business outcomes (save costs, make more revenue, make your business more efficient).
  3. We are a one stop shop when you, as a small business, want to  buy a set of cloud products. That means that we not only get you a discount on cloud services, but you also get one bill at a pre-set, published and predictable monthly service charge.

NewPath Consulting has put together 3 pricing plan packages that include a pre-set number of support hours per month that fit your business needs today, primarily based on the number of staff you have and what your business needs. We work with you to help your business grow and support a wider array of products and services as you succeed.

In short, NewPath Consulting wins, when our clients win. It's as easy as that.

ps. Here's the definition from a Forbes article that defines a "cloud services brokerage"

A cloud services brokerage is a third party company that adds value to cloud services on behalf of cloud service consumers. Their goal is to make the service more specific to a company, or to integrate or aggregate services, to enhance their security, or to do anything which adds a significant layer of value (i.e. capabilities) to the original cloud services being offered.

Yeah, that's about it.

Training Newsletter #2: An easier way to browse all your Google Docs - Google Drive!

Good day!

There is now a way to browse and open all your Google Docs accounts, right from your computer's desktop. The software is called Google Drive. You can install it on your machine and it will synchronise all your Google Docs content with your computer. You can easily open documents from your desktop without even going into a browser.

All your files will be available offline even, and you don't have to worry about backing them up. Once your computer is online everything will synchronise even if you made an edit "in the cloud".

Take a look at this great guide and video:

Firefox Memory Issues Solved! Set Browser.sessionhistory.max to 0

Does your Firefox web browser cause you headaches with memory use? Does it grow to over 1GB in memory over time and then slow down immensely. This may be your solution.

Firefox by default "caches" each tab you have open so that you can quickly use the back and forward buttons to flip through history. Depending on the memory of your machine this is usually set to as much as 8 pages of history per tab. Over time this can really balloon the memory footprint and cause the whole browser to literally slow to crawl.

Turning off this caching, may make back and forward buttons act slowly, but when is the last time you actively used browsing history anyways? Using applications and pinned tabs makes back and forward history browsing pretty obsolete. I turned off this feature and my browser definitely seems snappier even with 20-30 tabs open (!)

HOWTO:

  1. Type about:config in your Firefox address bar.
  2. Scroll down until you find the variable Browser.sessionhistory.max total viewers. You will probably find the value of (-1), which is automatic adjustment to up to 8 (based on a 4GB memory available to machine).
  3. Right click on the value and modify to 0 or 1 (keep 0 pages in history or 1 page max).

Step by Step: @Formstack to @Madmimi Integration using WebHooks

We have been using Formstack and Madmimi for several years now and have marvelled at the power of both of these products. For some reason there has been no integration available from Formstack to load data into Madmimi, until today.

With the excellet help from Shawn over at Madmimi, we were able to put together a simple integration that allows Formstack forms to populate Madmimi "audience" lists quite easily. The secret is in the use of the "WebHooks" submit action in Formstack along with the Webform functionality available in Madmimi. Instead of using the webform that Madmimi generates, we created a beautiful newsletter registration page in Formstack and tied this form to a Madmimi list.

Here's how...

Training Newsletter #1

Thank you Black Isle team for letting me speak with some of you this morning to get you introduced to the Black Isle Cloud. There are 7 products that Black Isle has access too and so far Google Apps and Highrise are the 2 being adopted so far.

Training Notes

1.  Please login and get acquainted to Google Apps. I sent the details on Google Apps to your personal email address. Watch these "Your First Days" videos to get acquainted with Google Apps for more details on specific features you may have not seen before in Gmail or Google Docs. According to the video "Google Sync" is what you use to do airplane work offline. Or you can use your smartphone -- let's experiment to see what works best.

2. You will find your Highrise invitation in your @black-isle.com mailbox.

3. Configuring Google Apps to integrate with your existing email software for contacts, calendars and tasks should you choose to do so is easy. Just follow these steps for any computer or smartphone. PC, Mac and many other devices are supported!

Syncing Google Apps with a PC or smartphone email application, Outlook calendars and contacts is easy with Google Sync. Download the appropriate software for your device and software, authenticate to your black-isle.com account. Under each "platform" button you will find instructions on how to configure Gmail for your particular software.

Suggestions and Follow Ups

1. Outlook integration with Highrise - would be nice to link the two. Turns out there are 3 extra products NewPath Consulting does not support yet that can do this. You may have to buy them on your own outside of the Black Isle license, but if they work we will add them for everyone and offer it as part of the regular service. Check the Highrise Extras page for CompanionLink, SyncAce and RedCritter 3rd party add-ons for highrise.

By the way Google does publish a "HOW TO TRANSITION" page for Outlook users. And describes what features Outlook has that Gmail still does not have.

2. A suggestion was made for Highrise: "Get Highrise to allow sharing of information between Highrise customers for a particular company or person at company -- kind of a private Facebook for Highrise users." Talk about breaking down silos! Some security issues here for sure, but we follow up with 37signals.com, the makers of Highrise, and see what they think.

3. ROI reports for Deals and leads won/lost. There is very little analytics reporting in Highrise. There are 2 3rd party solutions we can try: Easy Insight and EazyBI. I will work with John and Barry to identify how reporting should be run for Black Isle - this will be a major initiative tied to the approach to sales pipeline management. No 2 companies are alike in this respect and that's why I think Highrise doesn't have traditional reporting.

4. There is a group mailing list for all Black Isle North America employees. If you send an email FROM your @black-isle.com email address to

bina@black-isle.com

You will hit everyone on the team with the same email. This is how this email is getting to you now. Please email sales@newpathconsulting.com with your support questions or call (888) 781 2539.
